YMCA OF GREATER BOSTON “WELCOME HOME PROGRAM”
The YMCA of Greater Boston “Welcome Home Program” is a membership program for returning veterans, through its Constitution Inn YMCA in the Charlestown Navy Yard, launched a new program in collaboration with the MA Department of Veterans’ Services & the V.A.  This program is specifically geared toward assisting any local service member who has been injured in Iraq or Afghanistan.  Those who have been treated in V.A. hospitals & clinics will be given preference.  However, the program is open to all veterans who have served since 9/11/01 who have service-related injuries that would benefit from the type of exercise programs that can be provided at any of the 12 facility locations of the YMCA of Greater Boston, which are located throughout the city & in four suburban locations.

 

All 13 YMCAs have health & wellness centers with up to date cardiovascular & strength equipment, free weights, a variety of group exercise classes, & qualified staff available to set up appropriate individual exercise/rehabilitation programs in communication as needed with any medical professionals (physicians, physical therapists, nurses, etc) who may have been involved previously, in or outside of the V.A. system.  12 of the 13 YMCAs also feature aquatic centers & gymnasiums.

 

YMCAs provide a supportive, non-pressured environment to help people make connections & be supported by other people doing positive things for their health & sense of well being.  The program includes a full year of membership, free of charge, with funding provided by the Constitution Inn YMCA of the YMCA of Greater Boston.  Participants must apply to the Constitution Inn YMCA regardless of which YMCA they wish to join.  Once accepted, an intake/orientation session with a fitness expert at the YMCA of Greater Boston location of their choice (see list below) will be scheduled.  Applications must be in writing.  The rest of the process can be handled via telephone.

NEW SCHOLARSHIP FOR CHILDREN OF FALLEN MEMBERS – Submit application via the V.A. GI Bill Website

The children of military personnel who died in the line of duty since Sept. 11, 2001 may apply for an educational scholarshipsimilar to the new Post-9/11 GI Bill.  Benefits are retroactive to August 1, 2009.  The scholarship, which is administered by the Department of Veterans Affairs, is named after Marine Gunnery Sergeant John David Fry, 28, a Texas native who died in Iraq in 2006 while disarming an explosive.  He is survived by three young children.  The Department of Veterans Affairs is now accepting applications for the Fry scholarship.  For more information or assistance applying for educational scholarships, please call toll-free 1 (888) GIBILL-1, 1 (888) 442-4551, or visit the V.A. SHEAR MADNESS: Charles Playhouse, 74 Warrenton St. Tues., Wed. and Thurs. at 8 PM.  Sun.3PM and 7PM.  Set in a hairstyling salon that is the scene of a wacky murder, Shear Madness is the uproarious whodunit where the audience gets to solve the crime. Complimentary same-day reservations can be made by 3:30PM through the USO pending availability. Limit of two guests per active service ID. Donations directly to the USO appreciated.

 

LE GRAND DAVID MAGIC SHOW: Cabot Street Cinema Theatre: 286 Cabot St. Beverly, MA. A magic show for kids and adults at the beautiful, nostalgic Cabot Street Theatre in Beverly, MA.  Shows are at 3:00 p.m. on Sundays.  Please call the USO on Friday for Sunday’s performance.  Tickets are complimentary. The theatre will typically accommodate all dependents as well.
